Your Bible Lesson For The Day
What Happened To God's Perfect World?
When God finished his creative work on the sixth day, Genesis 1:31 says he looked at all that he had made, “and behold, it was very good,” meaning it was perfect! But look at the world you live in today. Is it perfect? Hardly! You wish it were perfect, right? For the world you live in is a mess! Why isn’t it perfect now? What happened to God’s perfect world?
In the beginning, shortly after God finished creating his perfect world, Genesis 2:9 states that in the Garden of Eden that God had made, he “caused to sprout from the ground every tree desirable to look at and good for food, and a tree of life in the middle of the garden, and a tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” Then according to Genesis 2:16,17 the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat from every tree of the garden; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it, you will surely die.”
The Lord God is loving and good. He gave Adam this one command that gave Adam the opportunity to freely show his love for God by not eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But if he chose to disobey God’s command, and he ate from that tree, he would suffer a terrible punishment for his disobedience – death!
Now sometime during the six days of creation God had made all the angels. Like the rest of God’s creation, they were very good. They were perfect and holy. But not long after being created, one of the angels, the devil, turned to sin and led many other angels into sin with himself. As 1 John 3:8 states, “The devil has been sinning from the beginning.”
Having turned away from God to pursue sin and evil, the devil made himself an enemy of God. He then set out to ruin God’s perfect creation and human race. Genesis 3 calls the devil “the serpent.” Having possessed a serpent, the devil then tempted the woman, Eve. 1 Timothy 2:14 reveals that she became utterly deceived and fell into sin. Genesis 3:6 explains what happened, saying, “When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was a delight to the eyes and the tree was desirable to become understanding, then she took from its fruit and ate it and gave it also to her husband with her and he ate it.” The two ate the forbidden fruit! They disobeyed God’s commandment and sinned.
Because of their sin that they brought into God’s perfect world, God’s perfect world was perfect no longer. So what happened to God’s perfect world? Sin entered into the world and ruined it. And because of sin this world you live in is a mess to this very day.
