What Chief Doctrines Does The Bible Teach You?
If you read a do-it-yourself article and after you read it you still do not know how to do it, you failed to understand what the article was teaching you. Likewise, if you read the Bible but fail to understand its main teachings, you miss what it is teaching you. Do you know what chief doctrines the Bible teaches you?
Romans 3:20 says, “. . . for by means of law comes a consciousness of sin.” This verse gives the name of one of the chief doctrines taught by the Bible. It is the law. Romans 1:16 says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes.” This verse gives the name of the second chief teaching of the Bible. It is the gospel. So the two chief doctrines that the Bible teaches you are the law and the gospel.
Now what does the law teach you? Four verses briefly sum up the content of what the law teaches you. The first verse is Matthew 5:48. It says, “Therefore you shall be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.” What demand does this verse say the law makes of you? That you must be perfect.
The verses of law in Exodus 20:3-17 say, “You shall . . . , You shall not . . .” So what more does the law teach you? What you must and must not do.
Another aspect of what the law teaches is revealed in Galatians 3:10. It says, “For as many as are of works of law are under a curse; for it is written, ‘CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT KEEP ABIDING BY EVERYTHING THAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW TO DO THEM.’ ” The law demands perfection, that each person must abide by every demand of the law all of the time. And the law threatens with punishment every person who is not perfect. The law, then, teaches you that you must be perfect, otherwise you are subject to the curse of God’s punishment.
What is more, Romans 3:20 above says that by means of the law comes a consciousness of sin. The law teaches you what sin is and shows you your sins.
What the gospel teaches you, on the other hand, is summed up in John 3:16. It says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, in order that everyone who believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” The gospel tells you about God’s love for you and for all people and tells you what God has done to save everyone, including you. What is more, it points you to God’s Son, Jesus Christ, and invites you to believe in him for eternal life and salvation.
So what chief doctrines does the Bible teach you? It teaches you the law that demands you be perfect, commands what you must and must not do, threatens you with God’s punishment, and shows you your sins. But the Bible also teaches you the gospel that tells you God loves and has saved you and all people, and it invites you to believe in God’s Son Jesus Christ for eternal life and salvation. If you know what these teachings of the Bible are, you know what chief doctrines the Bible teaches you.
