Your Bible Lesson For The Day
How Did God Bless Man And Woman?
Do you consider yourself blessed? You have been. Do you know how you have been blessed? Consider how God blessed man and woman in the beginning. Then you will see how you have been blessed as well.
After God created the first man and woman, Genesis 1:28 tells you, “And God blessed them, and God said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that crawls upon the earth.” What does this verse say God did to the man and the woman? He blessed them, both of them. The rest of the verse tells you how God blessed them. Count up the blessings.
What was the first way in which God blessed the man and woman? He said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth . . .” What did the first blessing consist of? Being fruitful and multiplying and filling the earth, right? God blessed the man and the woman with the ability to have children, which is one purpose of marriage.
What more did God say to the man and woman? “. . . fill the earth and subdue it.” So what did God’s blessing also include? Subduing the earth. Both the man and the woman were to use the gifts and abilities God had given to them when he created them to make the earth serve them and do what they wanted to accomplish.
And then what did God say to the man and the woman? “. . . rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that crawls upon the earth.” Man, meaning the human race, was the crown of God’s creation. Man had an intellect, knowledge, and capabilities that were clearly evident in his naming all the creatures God had made within a few hours of the sixth day. As the crown of God’s creation, the man and woman were to rule over all the other creatures God had made.
Through the fall into sin the human race lost the ability to rule over all the other creatures on earth. So you don’t have that blessing on earth anymore. But what other blessings did you count up that still remain, with which you also have been blessed? The ability to be fruitful and bear children, and the individual gifts and abilities that you have been given to master the earth and subdue it. So you see, you have been blessed.
